Ashlynn 3 Years

Now on to the big sister. Ashlynn turned 3 on January 3rd, which called for her wearing a little bling bling in honor of the golden birthday. No, not really, but just made sure she wore her gold shirt, headband and glittery gold sneakers to daycare on her birthday.

A few fun random smatterings about our firstborn and quite possibly the most hilarious little girl I know.

- Sleeps without someone laying down with her. This is a big one, folks. And don't think she doesn't try to use every stall tactic in the book or negotiate mommy or daddy laying down "oh but just for a liiiiiittle bit, that's it, promise." Have you ever read the book or heard the narration by Samuel L. Jackson of "Go the F to Sleep?" Yeah, similar scenarios have happened in the Wolff home. It's sometimes a process, but we get a good laugh at some of the things she says or does to put off bedtime. No, you can't wash your hands for a 5th time or your skin will feel like an alligator. No, you can't feed your baby her bottle, she's already tucked in next to you and surrounded by a random mix of bibs, bottles and blankies. Oh, you want me to re-button your pj shirt so you can undo all 10 of them again and say it "accidentally" came undone? This homie don't play that game.

- She's a sponge. Can spell her name, Alese's, our names and everyone at daycare (thank you Circle Time). Can count to 40. And is trying to now write her name...the letters are a little sketch, but she loves trying. Is great at shapes, and we've now moved onto pentagon, trapezoid, parallelogram, octagon and hexagon (Jer draws them and she rattles them off). Though we are busy at home with her, I credit our wonderful daycare with a lot of her educational milestones - Keri is truly amazing with the kids.

- Loves (probably in this order): her sister. Mommy and Daddy (don't worry, Jer...we're equal). Mickey Mouse, Dum Dum suckers, Circle Time at daycare, dancing, swimming, washing her hands, painting and riding her bike or scooter.

- She's big into doing every thing by herself. Every.last.possible.thing. Picking out clothes, getting dressed, opening packages, locking doors, buttering bread, buckling her car seat, picking up Alese, reaching things in high places by getting a nearby stool or chair, starting the bath, setting the table. You get the point. Let's just say Jer's patience has grown ten-fold since I met him. And his hair line might be slightly receding.

- Is great at memorizing...prayers, books, songs. We either say "Come Lord Jesus" common table prayer or sing "O the Lord is good to me..." before meals. "Now I lay me down to sleep" before bed, along with the Lord's Prayer (knows it in full...love how she says "tresspasses") and "God bless..." naming everyone she chooses to list. Sometimes it moves into objects, like praying for the door, the ladybug she saw outside, etc. She's big into Dr. Seuss. Has been ever since she was little, but is really loving some of the longer ones and has quite a few memorized that she likes to read to us. And songs...I think between having the radio on in the background at daycare, being in the car and then listening to music at home, she's up on her tunes. A few of her latest faves include, Ellie Goulding "Burn", JT and Jay Z "Holy Grail", Katy Perry "Roar", Ke$ha and Pitbull "Timber", Bruno Mars "Locked out of Heaven" and Miley Cyrus "We Can't Stop." Don't worry, she knows the kid classic songs, too...the latest from daycare is the Bear Hunt Song.

- Some favorite one liners include...
"When I turn 19, I can finally have gum."
"Mommy, are you even driving?" when she can't see my one hand on the bottom of the wheel. Such concern.
"Alese, you know better!" in a stern, scolding voice. Um, guess Ashlynn has heard that one herself before.
"Ugggghhhhh. You're driving me nuts!"
"You've gotta be kidding me."
"Sure" for everything. Want to go outside? Sure. Want to eat a snack? Sure.
"Alese Harper, do you want to come play with me? Say okay Alese, okay?"
"Alese is 1, I'm 3, Daddy's 29 and YOU'RE 30." Thanks for reminding me, Ashlynn.

- And finally, she's an amazing big sister. She's really great about including Alese in whatever activity she's doing. Don't get me wrong, there are times when she avoids Alese to have her own privacy or not have her mess up an art project. But for the most part she wants her around or involved. Ashlynn is always asking Alese to follow her around the house, and sure enough Alese trots right behind. She shares snacks, but is always sure to either automatically give her smaller pieces or ask me if it's okay if Alese has certain snacks, toys, etc., to be sure it's safe. The sister love is just melting me and Jer (ask me about this when they're in high school fighting over clothes or riding to school together).

We love you to the moon and back, Ashlynn!

I love that you blogged all this - it makes me miss her very much. She's growing up way too fast. I love how she's such a little person. I'm pretty sure I don't know all those shapes you listed off! Love & miss. Happy birthday Ash$.
